Computer Science, IT and Business

In our department we recognise that we live in a world where technology is changing rapidly. Therefore it is imperative that we act as facilitators to allow students to adapt and grow with these changes in order for them to develop and make the most of opportunities in the wider world.

We are strong believers in developing independence and problem solving skills through an engaging curriculum under a supportive yet challenging environment to ensure that all students maximise their potential and make good progress.

Mrs Garnett – Teacher of ICT and Business (Assistant Headteacher)

Key Stage 3

In ICT we aim to provide the students with everything they need to develop their ICT and Computer Science capability in order to prepare them for further study in either of these strands.

Students have 2 lessons per fortnight where they:

Explore the development of Computer technology and where this could take us in the future

Develop an understanding of computer hardware and software

Have an awareness of a range of e-safety issues and can endeavour to keep themselves safe while online

Understand the importance of networks in today’s society

Develop both visual and textual programming techniques

Understand the links between Mathematics and Computing

Evaluate the quality of both information found online, and their own work to make sure any products are suitable for audience and purpose

In Year 9 students have the option to study IT for a level 2 qualification- Cambridge Nationals Certificate in IT. This course includes both theory and practical skills surrounding the development of computer systems including the project lifecycle, legislation, spreadsheets, databases and presenting information to their audience. The course is assessed with a controlled assessment and an external written examination in Year 11.

Computer Science

This is a highly sought after qualification for students who have an aptitude in Mathematics and want to develop their logical and problem solving skills. This is a 100% theoretical course.
